What Is Vitamin D?

Vitamins, in general, are used to boast one's health. There are many forms of vitamins - fruits, vegetables, vitamin supplement pills, liquid vitamins and minerals, etc. There are also many kinds of vitamins. We will discuss vitamin D in this article.

Vitamin D is a fat soluble (i.e. a vitamin that can be absorbed in fat; stored in body fat) vitamin. It can be found in: fruits and vegetables, foods such as salmon and various other fish, breads, some meats, and sunshine. Sunshine is a significant amount of vitamin D, when one is given exposure to, because UV (ultra violet) rays from sunshine trigger vitamin D synthesis in the skin.

Generally, vitamins can be found in every fruit or vegetable you eat. These foods contain vitamin D specifically: fish (i.e. cod liver, cooked salmon, cooked mackerel, canned tuna fish, and canned sardine), milk (i.e. non-fat milk, reduced fat milk, vitamin D fortified, and whole milk), cheese (i.e. swiss cheese), fortified margarine, pudding (prepared from mix and made with vitamin D fortified milk), cereal (ready-to-eat with vitamin D fortified milk), egg (vitamin D is found in egg yolk), and cooked beef liver.

Sunshine is a good source of vitamin D, when given exposure to for ten to fifteen minutes. If given exposure to for any longer without applying sunscreen, there is a possibility for a sunburn, or even skin cancer if sensitive to sun. Sunscreen with an SPF (sun protection factor) of 8 and over will block out the sun's UV rays that produce vitamin D, but an SPF of 15 is recommended for long periods of exposure to the sun. CAUTION: DO NOT STAY TOO LONG IN THE SUN WITH OR WITHOUT SUNSCREEN!

According to laboratory, animal, and epidemiologic evidence, doctors and experts suggest that vitamin D, similar vitamin A, may be protective against some cancers. Studies have been conducted on that topic, and 90% of patients who have consumed a healthy diet of vitamin D have survived.

Alzheimer's disease is a progressive and non-curable disease that destroys brain cells, gradually causing a decrease in intellectual abilities, such as memory, personality, behaviour, etc., and can eventually impair all cognitive functions. Alzheimer's disease is often related to hip bone fractures, since most Alzheimer's patients are home bound, and are not encouraged to go around due to safety, so they do not receive a lot of vitamin D from sunshine. Alzheimer's patients are encouraged to open windows for more sunshine and fresh air.

While vitamin D can be good for your health, but there ARE risks if too much vitamin D is consumed. Some of the risks from consuming too much vitamin D are: nausea, vomiting, poor appetite, constipation, weakness, and weight loss. There can also be some internal damage, such as to the kidney. Vitamin D is good to your body, but overdoses can be dangerous.
